To be eligible for bariatric surgery, you must be
between 16 and 70 years of age (with some exceptions)
and morbidly obese (weighing at least 100 pounds over
your ideal body weight and having a BMI of 40). A BMI
between 35 and 39 also may qualify you for the procedure
if pre-existing co-morbidities, such as diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or sleep apnea,
are present.
Co-morbidities that Factor into
Bariatric Surgery Eligibility
Co-morbidities are medical conditions that exist in
addition to obesity and are often a result of being
overweight. Co-morbidities are a factor in determining
a patient's eligibility for bariatric surgery.
Serious comorbidities include:
- Type II diabetes mellitus
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Pseudotumor cerebri
Less serious comorbidities include:
- Hypertension
- Dyslipidemias
- Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
- Venous stasis disease
- Significant impairment in activities of daily
living
- Intertriginous soft tissue infections
- Stress urinary incontinence
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Weight-related arthropathies which impair
physical activity
- Obesity-related psychosocial stress
